Eulogy to My Wallet

My Wallet

Well the sketch you see though is a recognizable caricature of my wallet, does no justice to the battered tatter that I carry in the name of a wallet.

Well if not in terms of a sketch, at least in the write up this post is an eulogy to my companion of a long time… my wallet.

It all began when of all things fancy displayed in a souvenir shop in a small town in Switzerland for reasons un-phantom-able I picked this red brick like wallet, even as my brother rolled his eyes on my lack of taste. But of course I loved it to bits (well it is coming of in bits anyway…)

The wallet, which is quite often confused for a medical kit (I do not understand!!! It is white on red and not red on white!!!), has annoyed most friends of mine as I cling to it everywhere I go, ranging from fancy fine dines to shack like restaurants… It has annoyed two of them enough to pick me new wallets …

I got writing when a friend mentioned that a wallet describes the character of its owner! I to my horror am clearly in trouble as the tiny clutch is filled with bus tickets from yore, movie passes, ATM receipts, shopping bills, sometimes my phone, odd clips or anything stuff-able… Oh yes!! At times money too!! (Usually only in the first half of the month). There is absolute madness inside it, but with a method to it. For, I always find what I want, a rupee in a nook, a medical prescription thought to be lost, a bill three months old, a safety pin, a hand sanitizer, a lone lip color. Not all at the same time, but always miraculously there when needed.

Thus, I hereby re-affirm my ‘death do us part’ vows with my beloved wallet… To be honest I think of picking a shiney new wallet off the stands sooo many times, but none seem so right when I hold it. They have the looks, but never the persona. If you are the sorts who have a torn sweatshirt treasured over the years you would smile, else I see the smirk spread gloriously on your face.

But like friends, in life, some things are special the way they are…

  1. I like the way you sketch not only through your brush but also with your pen. The stories that you weave around your pictures are so natural. Its more ‘common’ than our common man! Great Going Dear!
    cheers…

  2. Sorry about your wallet. Then again, getting to close emotionally,to inanimate objects is not good,it shows us how pretentious and superficial we’ve all become.I do not mean, just you,no,I mean this giant macrocosm we call western society in general. Now I must admit, that,I had this plaid shirt with paint, holes, bleach stains in it that I had,and once loved.I had the shirt for 12 years and it was so damn comfortable, but I lost it in a move.I learned a quick lesson after that, that it is easier to purge things than to make everything around you an appendage to be glorified. Now I keep nothing I can’t throw away in an instant without guilt, and yet,I love my book collection,so go figure.I enjoyed your blog.I think we like things which mirror our personality, this is why I think we tend to hold onto things and rank them accordingly.I am no different,I too see things in this way.Maybe if we believe in things long enough they become fixtures in our life, were perception really is reality but, that is dangerous thinking but,we are who we are………………PeculiarPotato………….Gone!

  4. @ Peculiar Potato… thank you for the feedback :) Being unattached is like nirvana. But life is all about the commitments we have to people, to objects, to memories…

Nothing or nonone in life is a ” I cant live without ” but its ok to hurt while saying a good bye I guess :)
